In the Hazara division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, school-leaving and college examinations are conducted by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Abbottabad. It conducts the two examinations that frame schooling here: the Secondary School Certificate, which Pakistani students call Matric and which spans Class 9 and Class 10, and the Higher Secondary School Certificate, the Intermediate stage covering Class 11 and Class 12. Working from its base in Abbottabad city, the board registers candidates from affiliated government and private schools and colleges throughout the Hazara division, allocates examination centres, conducts the annual and supplementary sittings, marks the scripts, and certifies the results that decide college and university admission across KPK. At Matric level candidates are placed in the Science or Arts group, while Intermediate students settle into one of the established streams, among them Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering, ICS, ICom and FA.
